Walking and the Back

Arms and Hands:  The arms should stay relatively close to the body during arm swing.  The arm swing amplitude will increase, consistent with an increase in stride and walking speed.  The arms will swing forward and backward.  Each arm will keep cadence with the opposite leg.  Always keep the hands relaxed while walking.  Elbow flexion should generally not exceed 90 degrees.

Feet and Ankles:  Each foot strike has three elements the first of which is heel strike, followed by rolling of the mid-foot towards the arch (pronation) and the third element that is characterized by pushoff from the toes.  The angle of push off should occur between the 1st and 3rd toes.  Land softly onto each foot with each step.  Use supportive shoes that do not allow excessive rolling of the feet (pronation).
